How to Spot Deepfakes

Cybercriminals are using AI to impersonate people you trust. Here’s how to stop them.

Deepfakes were once quirky social media trends or experimental tech. Now, they’re powerful weapons in the hands of cybercriminals.

Today’s attackers are using AI-generated voice clones, fake videos, and hyper-realistic emails to impersonate CEOs, vendors, and clients. These tools are being deployed in phishing schemes, invoice fraud, and social engineering attacks, and they’re getting harder to detect by the day.

Small and midsize businesses are now prime targets, not because they’re high-profile, but because they often lack the verification protocols and security training large enterprises rely on.

It only takes one convincing message to bring your defenses down. And while your team might be trained to spot typos or shady links, are they prepared to question a “video voicemail” from leadership asking for a wire transfer?

This is the new face of cybercrime.
Here are three ways to spot deepfakes and AI impersonations, before they cause real damage.

Three Ways to Spot a Deepfake or AI Impersonation

  1. Look for inconsistencies in tone or context
If something feels off, an unusual tone, odd phrasing, or a message that’s out of character, it probably is. AI-generated messages can mimic grammar and style, but they often miss nuance, timing, and context.
  2. Check for digital fingerprints
In videos or audio, look for signs like unnatural blinking, mismatched lip-syncing, or flat emotional delivery. In written messages, red flags include sudden formatting errors, awkward transitions, or a suspicious sense of urgency.
  3. Confirm through a second channel
Train your team to verify unexpected or high-risk messages by phone, video, or in person. Never rely on a single source when dealing with financial transactions, sensitive data, or login requests.
